About Harbor House

A time for Compassion and  a Great Family Environment

Philosophy

Since its founding, Harbor House has served as a beacon of hope to those lost in the grips of addiction and to the families searching for help. With the vision of progressive business and community leaders, Harbor House was established as a non-profit organization in 1973 to address the dire need for affordable and accessible community-based residential substance abuse treatment. Over the past 45 years, we have served over 16,000 clients and their families.

Our treatment philosophy emphasizes individualized treatment focused on helping clients to hope, heal, revive and recover by rehabilitating the mind, body and spirit. We approach a substance use disorder as a treatable illness that affects a person biologically, psychologically, spiritually, emotionally, and socially. Using our person-centered approach, the specific needs of individuals receiving treatment are addressed, as well as that of the family and children.

Understanding the devastating nature of addiction, we aim to treat our clients with respect, compassion, and dignity. Our program fosters an environment that practices respectful acknowledgement of each client’s individual spiritual and religious beliefs, as well as cultural and ethnic practices. We believe that what is important for an individual is their personal journey which will support a solid recovery program.

Over the past 20 years, Harbor House has made significant changes and achieved milestones that have allowed us to broaden our scope of care and reach further into addressing community and client needs. Our organization is charged with providing high quality evidenced-based treatment programs that have been certified by the Department of Mental Health since 1973 and by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) since 2011. Earning these accreditations has proven Harbor House’s dedication to international standards of quality and has provided Harbor House a larger footprint in chemical dependency treatment.

We follow a curriculum of evidence-based programming that integrates clinical expertise, practices based on proven research evidence, and client values and preferences. This approach allows clients to experience what being in recovery feels like, put learned skills into practice, and build a stronger support system. Through this approach, clients gain the confidence, knowledge, and motivation to live a life of sustained recovery.
